SELF- Trust:

As a coach- my clients often hear me say:

💛 You can accept, modify, or reject
💛 I’ll lay this idea/suggestion on the table, and you can pick it up or leave it there.
I am not the boss of you. I believe in you. I have some really good ideas and connection and protection strategies to share – but you are the ultimate authority on you.

My friend Justin mentioned this book by Rick Rubin recently- and I’ve been mainly listening – but this morning, I opened the hardback- and loved this invocation for the reader to use what is helpful and let go of the rest.

Self-trust takes time; it is a practice, not an event.

Navigating self-trust isn’t always easy. It’s about finding your footing amidst the pressures of fitting into the molds the world shapes for us—often at the expense of our authenticity.

Let’s talk people-pleasing. It’s a tune many of us dance to, a coping mechanism etched into our psyches from childhood. We all crave connection and acceptance. But beyond the superficial layers lies the question: Who are you, stripped of the thirst for approval

I’ve found that this takes self-awareness, deconstruction, and time rebuilding.

I’ve been delving into what society labels as “negative,” and it’s been a revelation – both internally and in the reactions of those around me.

“You’re too angry.”

“You’re too sad.”

“You’re too negative.”

“You’re too complainy.”

“You think too much.”

“You worry too much.”

“You judge too much.”

“Just let it go!!!”

Sound familiar We tend to shove these parts into dark corners, hoping they’ll disappear because we were taught to shame and exile them instead of caring for them.  As children, unconsciously, we did what we could; we built coping skills to stay safe and belong.  In childhood, those coping skills served us, but as adults, they need updating and re-working (not abandonment or exile).

As children, we tried to control these parts.  As adults, it is more helpful to connect and relate with these parts of us.

Self-trust takes time on task being connected to, curious about, and compassionate with these parts of us, like building any trusting relationship.  We can meet these parts and become curious and compassionate with them.

The words meet yourself, listen to yourself, hear yourself, witness and hold your most tender parts. This connection is a sacred unburdening to lightness, and to greater self-trust, confidence, and courage over a red-toned love painting by Allison Crow

True surrender and SELF-trust aren’t about evading the struggle; they’re about embracing every facet of ourselves, even the ones we fear. They’re about being present for our anger, our anxiety, and our struggles without judgment.

Building self-trust is a journey of nurturing the relationship between our true selves and these often-overlooked parts. It’s about spending quality time with our shadows, acknowledging their presence, and finding peace within their chaos.

This journey isn’t always smooth sailing. Relationships built on pretense may crumble, leaving behind a sense of loss. Yet, through the cracks, we catch glimpses of our authentic selves, resilient and unapologetically real.

Each moment of wobble or struggle is an opportunity to strengthen your self-trust skills.

Ask yourself:

Who would you be if you trusted yourself wholeheartedly

What if I knew how to BE with any discomfort that came up

What if I never left myself, or any part of me again

And remember, clarity often emerges from the depths of our struggles, not just from moments of blissful meditation. Let building self-trust take time.  You’ve got this.

“When I realized my pain came from wanting to be liked, I began to love myself. When I realised my pain came from wanting to be acknowledged, I started to see who I really was…”

This poem by Tanya Markul is a beautiful expression of the work we do in IFS and IFS coaching. We learn to self-lead, to self-regulate, and what it means to truly self-love.

Many of us spend most of our lives attempting to regulate others. When our protectors are leading, we are masking and maneuvering to be liked and to belong – and there is NOTHING wrong with you – that’s actually innate biology. See how babies – with no vocabulary or logic are learning and responding at the attunement level to stay connected.

We learn to disconnect from ourselves and then live in those patterns subconsciously until we can learn and practice being the primary support and care we’ve always needed; PRACTICE IS KEY, and time on task so that our body’s muscle memory and the cells in our being get it.

We also can’t get rid of these protective parts, but that’s what we’re taught to do – control it away. What works and seems counter-intuitive is connection and the very attunement we were seeking as babies and children.

It is time to learn to SELF-regulate, to SELF-lead.

This is the awkward work my clients and I are doing. In the context of whatever life is handing them )biz, family, relationship, children) we are learning new ways of BEING WITH and leading these activated (an no longer working) parts.

If you would like to do this messy, awkward, both awesome, and hard as fuck work to really get to know and meet and trust all parts of you, I have 4 more spots on my roster. I’m primarily working with people in year-long agreements right now- to be on the journey long enough to build new practices through time on task.

What I’m noticing in me and in my clients is a greater sense of calm grounding, especially in formerly triggering situations. Less grasping out there and more confidence within, less tolerance for manipulations and bullshit, and more connectedness in general.

A client once asked, what does this do to be generative to my business (We’re often so used to torturous productivity and sales stuff being fed to us). My business clients KNOW what works to generate tactically. What’s getting in the way isn’t business and marketing skills – it’s the “inner management team and their distractions, doubts, and procrastinations that block creativity and courage. I can help with that.

Big love for you and all parts of you.

Your favorite life coach,
💛 Allison

Front porch work.

My specific amazing clients have protectors & internal that use fierce but publicly rewarded coping mechanisms like #peoplepleasing #overachieving #overfunctioning #intellectualizing #awareness #caregiving #overthinking #anxiety and #strategizing. My clients often also have strong #innercritics and #perfection & #highstandards.

These are awesome and valuable skills.

Our goal is not to get rid of them but instead create an inner and physical (not just intellectual) trusting relationship with these parts- to learn from them, listen to their wisdom, and be in a different relationship with them. When we do- they relax a little & no longer OVERperform to exhaustion.

We spend time in connection and curiosity on the front porch – so to speak. Before we try to “go inside”.

We spend time together to create attunement, and attunement opens op connection and connection creates access to our natural #selfenergy. It’s a beautiful thing to sit on the front porch and facilitate these relationships in my clients’ inner systems. And it makes going even deeper inside almost natural. 💛

Not all #ifscoaching is exactly like this- this is just what I see in my personal style as a coach and in my specific niche of clients. 💛

You, at anytime, can sit on your own inner front porch and give your inner parts more love and connection, not less.
💛 Allison.

Imagine a very quiet secret service protector. She is quiet but consistently over my right shoulder. Her presence is thick and always there. But she isn’t on guard for outside threats; she is monitoring my behavior, my productivity, my processes, and my very existence.

Most of my “Inner System” and parts use verbal language to communicate and are easy to see and know. This part grunts from time to time (a bit like Roy Kent) with disapproval.AI generated female secret sevice agent head and shoulders with glasses on, no smile, and fierce look.
Her grunts translated into words are:

😡You are doing it wrong.
😡If you don’t get it done, you’ll be left.
😡You should do more.

😡If you slow down, you will evaporate into the void of nothing, NOTHING. ]
😡 You need to manage this shit because no one else can.

She was brought into my system by being exposed to high-demand religion and systemic patriarchy communities from 1st grade – 25 years old.

I feel the weight of her hard-on-me-ness in the muscles around my scapula. Sometimes I feel her in my clenched jaw.
For the first time, I turn directly to her and say, “Hello, Hard-On-Me, I see you. I am here for you, ” Keeping my distance but communicating my presence with my belly and heart.

She’s not falling for it, and that’s ok. She sees me as 15 years old. And that’s ok too.

She is one of my primary protectors. ALWAYS on. Not like many of my other parts who come and go. She rare

ly sleeps.

I can sense her desire for connection but her fear of dropping her guard. That’s ok, too.

It’s a start.
A connected start.
A connected start plants a seed of softness and presence without asking too much.
Trust must be built first, and trust takes time.
_______
We are all made of multitudes, and because we are human, some of these parts are gripping outdated means and organizing our lives for our protection, which is no longer needed. But we’ve been taught to override these parts, ignore them, and shove them down.

There is another way. It involves new skills. And gentle time on task. And it leads to that inner softness and genuine grounded confidence. Moving through the world less encumbered.
This is the work I do in myself and that I help my 1:1 clients do.
💛

I’ve been experimenting with something entirely new on behalf of ALL my parts. Especially the ones I’ve suppressed most of my life. I always imagined that I was a bit like Ted Lasso- but I think the real me is more Roy Fucking Kent.

A few months ago, I let myself have a new reaction to my irritations. Instead of judging myself, I’m actually creating beautiful and miraculous results by pursuing, flirting with, and referring to my irritation.

Roy Kent and Oscar the Grouch are my idols. Totally irritated. Totally pure.

I signed up for a conference a few months ago- for a guy that bugs the shit out of me. I get so dang charged when I see his content. I bought his book. I threw it in the recycled bin last year. And this season- I let my irritation decide. And she bought a ticket to his event- not to tear him down- but to see what we could learn through our irritation.

Oi!

If you don’t watch tv – I’m probably not your gal.

No shit. I am 1000000% aware of this. And I’m done being ashamed of my overthinking parts. Before I get to making my list of the things I adore and love about “thinking too much,” – let me tell anyone who considers saying this to someone- anyone who overthinks is already keenly aware- we know, and this kind of comment is not helpful. It’s dismissive and rude.

Ok.

My overthinking parts are awesome. I love them. Let me count just some of the ways:
1. They make me shit loads of money by helping people solve problems.
2. duh, I am a professional and personal philosopher and psychologist. I literally study thoughts and ideas and mind.
3. I am an artist and poet and writer, and author- because I think too much.
4. My thinking parts CARE and Feel deeply. I don’t wanna live in a world where I lose my compassion for others – and to do that I need to think about lots of things.
5. The ways to stop my thinking parts include excessive drinking or xanex. Don’t wanna suppress them and so I’ve learned to BE with them. While chatty they are benevolent friends. And yes. Meditation with them is noisy and I’m ok with that. I’m rarely lonely because of my thinking parts.
6. My thinking parts are simply craving things almost every human craves. Connection. Belonging. Significance. They just use words and language and ideas. – which I find fucking fascinating.
7. Anything I have created and cultivated in my life that is good came from and idea and a thought. It didn’t manifest out of my vagina because I clinched a yoni egg in there and prayed. I created it with my mind bound in the universe. Yes I may have had excessive thoughts – sometimes I wrestle and sometimes I stress, but I also experience bliss and bless- I create excessively and I LOVE this about me.
Why on earth would I want to let it all go?
If I’m too much- go find less.

💛, Allison

PS: I love how people are always telling me to NOT be XYZ – often something that is acutely part of my ADHD and neurodivergence. Thanks for the ableism, yall. My DX helps me stand in my true self without it being wrong.

Your Inner Critic, Inner Judger, and Shoulding parts need your love and affection – not banishment or elimination.

I’ve found it easier to give my affectionate presence to my anxious and depressed parts. Perhaps it is because I have been aware of them for much longer than some of my more aggressive managers.

From an IFS lens:
💛all parts have benevolent intent managers are trying to control life so we don’t feel pain
💛they run daily life and give us the illusion of safety and control.

Many of my thinking parts are managers scrambling for certainty in an uncertain world. It’s been said that “all thinking is parts.” We must remember that the goal is not to eliminate parts but lead them with attuned love.
handwritten quote by francis weller that reads: attunement is a particular quality of attention wedded with affection offered by someone we love and trust. Green watercolor and black ink frame

I came across this quote by Francis Weller – and I particularly loved the phrase “quality of attention wedded with affection.”
This is my intention. To gently build my muscle memory for befriending my Inner Critic, my Relentless Shoulding parts, and the parts that often tell me I’m doing it wrong. I am here for you feisty managers. I see you. I will not leave you. I am here for you.

What is possible if you were to meet these parts of you with more openness and affection?

An insight about my creative process that may point you to insights about your own creative process:

When I openly acknowledge the hard and I can compassionately witness myself and even the tiniest of suffering, the hard often lifts within a few days.
It is a part of accepting the both/and – of living in the Wild Edges of Being Human.

PS TL/DR people move on. I’m not here for your dopamine hit; my writing is here to help me and then you think differently and change your life.

Current Hard:

In my current facebook memories – are the promos and images for the course I used to teach called 💗Share Your Heart: Show Your Work💗 – a delightful and helpful course about authentic marketing on social media. The course was reverse-engineered from what delightfully worked for me in the first 7 years of moving my business online after leaving corporate.

I LOVED and enjoyed my relationship with social media.

And currently -I don’t feel that love. I am aware that my lenses are cloudy and the “lens cleaner” is in my own hand, not outside of me.
Since 2008 I have created and shared prolifically online. Since even before that, if you count my blogspot blog.

I do love to write and to process and share with words.

I did thousands of live videos and have recorded almost 200 Podcast episodes. For the last four years, I have written and then published a book from my heart.

For most of that time, it was effortless – truly 98% spontaneous overflow of my precious yellow heart 💛.
And that 💗Sharing My Heart and Showing My Work 💗allowed you all to get to know me – and many of you – hundreds – stepped forward to work with me in some way. It never felt like selling.

Recently, I have inner parts that are overwhelmed and irritated, and deeply sad about the extreme parts of crappy capitalism. My brain can’t unsee the patterns of greed. I, like many of you, often feel the burnout of crappy capitalism and the burnout of shitty social media. And yet, here I am, a capitalist, selling a high-fee service – a luxury. And my revenue has become reliant on me “Sharing My Heart and Showing My Work.” 😳

“Content creation” in order to….. SELL has been repulsive to me. I feel like I’m standing in a house of mirrors and can’t escape it. Go viral, get followers, convert in your DMs, do this reel, do that tiktok, get famous on booktok…….

Be in the world, not of the world, became a mandate instead of an opportunity.

Of course, instead of letting it rest, I wrestle and inquire with that repulsion; I judge myself and become hard on myself – not mean, but certainly, I put pressure to come to a conclusion.

My discernment has gotten foggy, and I’ve slipped into full-on waiting for people to ASK to hire me. It’s been easier to judge others for not choosing my credibility and value than it has been to stand in it and make offers.
In writing this and speaking with my friend Jeanine – things are already starting to clear up. It makes perfect sense that those muscles would atrophy after the year I had last year. Grief and a heart attack will do that to you.

The questions I’m tenderly pondering in this content creation marketing kerfuffle:
❓What do I truly desire?
❓What would feel fun?
❓What obligations could I release?
❓What if I didn’t give SO much..what if I let less be more.
❓What’s possible in business and networking relationships away from social media?
❓What in the garden of my business is ready to be uprooted and released, what just needs some pruning, and what needs to be planted, anew?

And for now, I’ll end right there and just BE.
