Healing and Hope after Hard Journies with Colette Nies Von Hanna

Navigating Life’s Challenges: A Conversation with Colette Nies Von Hanna

Join me for a conversation with long-time family friend Colette Nies Von Hanna, who shares her journey and insights on being human. Colette, an organic gardener, socio-ecological feminist theologian, and energy researcher from New Braunfels, Texas, discusses the interconnection of ecological trauma and personal experiences. She reflects on her career shifts, including a political run, her academic pursuits, and community gardening efforts involving personal, professional, and spiritual growth. Colette shares her struggle with cancel culture, dealing with political and personal attacks, and the importance of self-awareness in activism and community involvement. She emphasizes the importance of resilience, authenticity, and vision despite facing extreme adversity and the challenges of social expectations.

Colette Nies Von Hanna, MSSW, MDIV

Activist, Socio-Ecological Feminist Theologian, Energy Researcher, Social Worker, Chaplain, 3rd Gen Organic Gardener, Aspiring Urban Farmer, Adoptive Mom, River-Goer, Rabble-Rouser, Bleeding Heart, who loves strong coffee and long naps.

The quote mentioned from my friend Justin’s LinkedIn page:

“To the people who are emotionally sensitive, who care so much about everything no matter how hard they try not to, who notice even the smallest things and take everything to the heart, the struggle is valid. I hope you get surrounded with people who are kind enough to understand you and even if you can’t expect everyone to adjust for you, I hope you get extra patience from this world.”

Hello Humans, today we are jamming with fellow reinventor Cindy Ingram.

Cindy has a book coming out later in the year and today we are going to talk a little bit more about reinvention.

Reinvention shows up on the outside but it’s usually because things happen on the inside.

Originally choosing her work based on how it felt,
Cindy shows a certain level of self trust to choose those kind of things when we might think we need to do something different.

“It has to feel right whatever I’m doing” – Cindy Ingram

And it takes a big leap to move careers with full on structural reinvention.

Love,

Allison

Ah, the imperfection of the human experience. You are not doing it wrong if it feels hard, or bad, or disconnected.  You are not screwing up your kids, you didn’t marry the wrong person, and your business is not destined for failure. I see so many clients struggle with the normal human imperfection of life – we make up these stories and live in a society that imposes the outcome of perfection. When it isn’t the fairy tale, we suffer more than we need to because we don’t know how to be in the wild edges of being human.   I hate the phrase “love what is.” It feels so “bypassy” – and there is a way to “BE with” that IS loving what is – it is the verb of love – not the fluffy ideal of love.

Come play with me in the imperfection of this glorious thing called life.

PS:  Camp Cultivate is May 7-11 in the Austin, Texas area- we will be exploring the theme of The Wild Edge of Being Human and how to actually BE in the edges.  It’s a small and intimate event this year.  Find out more at Camp Cultivate 2023

In conversation with my coach (and my therapist) – when I tap into the clarity of where I’m pulled to BECOME, the light shows up in my eyes in one instant, and then in the next, I hit the gaping space between where I am and where I want to go…

And I wobble.

My voice begins to shake, and my stomach gurgles – my brain amps up her stories and excuses.  The doubt fires up and conspires with all the reasons not to grow.

And my coach, Tony, lifts his hand and vibrates it horizontally where I can see it – to remind me of the wobble that happens when we are attuning to something new.  It’s a visual anchor to remind me to slow down and be with what I call the wobble. While he shakes his hand – he often says, “I’ve got you.”

The Wobble is a Part of the Human Experience.

This week, I also saw the wobble:

  • In a few of my clients, as they saw the responsibility they were pushing away instead of rising in their leadership
  • In one of my writing colleagues as she hit a grand new awareness about who she is becoming through writing her story
  • In a high school friend who was sharing some of her tender therapy realizations with me over a salad and a bowl of mac and cheese at Panera.
  • In a few of my clients as they bravely navigate becoming their more authentic selves even when the world asks for them to “fit in.”
  • In a precious friend who held a hospice vigil with her dying mother.

The Wobble is Not a Weakness

  • It is a sign you are building strength and new muscle memory.
  • It is a sign you are attuning to new experiences.
  • It is a sign you are attuning your nervous system to a new state of capacity and calm in the face of doubt and fear.
  • It is a sign you are stretching.
  • It is a sign of the becoming you are in the middle of. (yes, I ended that with a preposition).
  • If you are a goal person – it is proof you are making progress toward that outcome.

The wobble, the soreness, and sometimes even big trembles are what live in the space between your atrophy and comfort — and the being or doing you are growing into.

  • How will you hold the wobble In your mind with your thoughts In your body?
  • I offer to you to slow down, and hold the discomfort with compassion and strength.
  • I plant the seed of remembering, “YES – this is growth, and it’s working,” when the discomfort rises up and starts to freak you up.
  • And finally, I invite you to be the one that says to all parts of you, “I’ve got you.”

“Where have you atrophied#8221; is a question I’ve been considering for myself and offering to my clients.

My wise inner self shows me were it’s time for me to build strength and courage to be with the wobble. Yours can show you too.

And if you are looking for a coach to help support you – one who can say, “I’ve got you,” as you lean in, I can help with that.

Here are a few ways I can support you.

This is the work I am helping my business owner clients do.  These are the conversations in my book Unarmored: Finding Home in The Wild Edges of Being Human. This is some of the focus of my live event Camp Cultivate in May, and this is the foundation from which we do group life and business coaching in my small membership program, Soulies: Self Leadership Society.

💛 Love, Allison

Hello Hello!

So here’s the thing… y’all know. Y’all know, don’t you?nbsp;

You know, you know exactly what you need to do to hit the result you need.
Let’s tell some fucking truth to yourself about why you’re not getting the results.

Tell yourself the truth about why you’re not getting the results that you want.

You’re not getting the results that you want because you are letting your fears and your insecurities lead, instead of saying, fuck it I’m going to do the thing.

Share your fucking work and show your fucking heart.

I want to hear your heart. I want to hear who you’re being in the world.
I want to hear what you crave. I want to hear what you struggle with.
I want to hear what you’re overcoming

The number one thing I see that people screw up:

They do not decide to be visible. They do not decide to be visible as a way of being.

The mistake you’re making is you’re not being visible. You’re not sharing your fucking heart. You’re not showing your fucking work.
You’re over-complicating it.

Love,

Allison

Today is a peak into a private one on one coaching session with my long time client Joelle Bohart.  This podcast and post is shared with full permission.

Joelle and I met many years ago back in the real estate days. She was a client back then for learning how to be a productivity coach and she has been a member of Soulies for a very long time… since the early days… and she is also a part of my Spark, Unhustle, and Flow Women’s Circle.

Joelle and I have had many conversations about the relationship she’s had with her mom and the way she grew up. When I first met Joelle in real estate she was really putting on this perfectionist look right, be right, do right persona that wasn’t the authentic Joelle.

She let go of that lady, let her hair go wild and curly, and started wearing colorful clothes and it’s been beautiful to watch her journey. In he last 3 years she was one of the top 10 globally in her real estate company.

She’s been in Real Estate for 25-30 years and is also a certified Qoya teacher.

She and her husband moved this month from CA to TX, they sold their home and moved across the country to create a new life in Texas. Joelle is at a new space in her life where she doesn’t know if she’s going to pick up real estate here or completely reinvent herself and she’s giving herself permission to explore and create and just be but she’s also moved her Mother to Texas with her.

Imagine a move across the country, a new city, and doing all the things you have to do including building a new house and temporarily living in a rental house. All these outer stimulations are causing some turbulence.

So we pick up today with some very sweet parts work where we are not only acknowledging the inner child in her we are working with the relationship with her mother, which can be derogatory and reminded Joelle of when she was little.

We are helping her to get back to self-trust and self-leadership and soothing the parts of her that are feeling tender and frustrated and protected.

Thank you, Joelle, for sharing so openly as you work through your burdens.

Welcome to episode 143:  Another in a series of live coaching sessions with my clients.  Brooke Genn is a long-time Soulie (Facebook website).  This episode is a perfect example of how often is what seen as a strategy session – is really a doorway to a deeper inner work session.  I love strategy and can often help my clients see strategic paths to profit and pleasure, and even more important, really digging deep underneath a “limiting belief” to heal and unhook the resistance and fear.  Enjoy this session.  Listen in and look for insights that you can borrow from Brooke’s session.

Brooke is showing up with some blocks and confusion about creating a strategy for her Selfie Masterclass that would support her energy, finances, and busy retreat photography schedule.
She wants to create a system or structure to make more from her offer that would allow her to scale it and be at home.

Notes from the session:

What do you mean by structure?
Why not just when you feel like doing it?
What about energy?

A lot of creatives need permission to always go with your flow.
Take a year or season and look.

What about a simple, visual calendar like this one I use that spaces your offerings out in seasons.

Energetic Offering Calendar

Start to visually and energetically chunk out working with your energy and the seasons.
Get that down and then see what’s available.

Create an energetic calendar — it can help you with your marketing.
You don’t have to start marketing until you’re heading into that season.
When your energy doesn’t fit in the system that’s another resentment and that causes us not to full-on attract the clients.

Looking at recording it vs the value of being there to teach it live.
Record one and put it in your pocket
You can use it and then have a live session after they have taken it and you can do a condensed Q & A

Check-in with the wisdom of your body for pricing.

Limiting belief: People are only going to take this class if they have worked with me before, not strangers on the internet.

I feel tense in my lower neck.
Bring your attention into the lower neck into that brainy voice and take a breath… let it be separate from you.
Feel compassion towards it – this part of the brain that tightens your neck is scared.

What does it want you to know?

There is less risk and it’s safer to talk to clients that already know me.

What are you afraid would happen if you took the risk?

I have a fear that when you scale things it comes with headaches.
Scaling things comes with a lot more opinions.

This part of me is a little overwhelmed by the bigness and the people that don’t know me.
That part of you wants to feel heard and understood.

Check-in with the parts that are nervous about the risk.

Create a system that supports them.
A compassionate space for all these parts of yourself.

If you reverse engineer those limiting beliefs they are coming from parts of yourself.
Let those parts know that you will manage disappointment and conflict.
Their job is to be creative and playful.

Find the youngest love of your life and think, how would I love them and give that to yourself.

Listen in on a live coaching session with one of my clients!

Megan is a current client, a member of Soulies, came to Camp StarHeart and is a Leader in our community.

We take a moment to connect our energies with gratitude & let the outside world fall away.
Check in with your intuition and listen to yourself.

I am a part of my business, but I’m not my business!

Now that I’ve disconnected my business from myself… now what do I want to do?
Play Create a course?

What’s important about Play?
What do I really want?

Drop down into your body, out of your head and notice what comes up… nothing is wrong.
What does living a creative life mean to you?

Balance between masculine, which is very structured,  and the Feminine which is less structured, more in the moment.

What would it look like to add more Feminine?nbsp;
Allowing myself & not guilting myself.

I can get caught up in the productivity ideal

Talk to that part and ask it to please give you some space.
What’s been working has been working and a shift is coming.

Keep listening, check in.

What do those parts want you to know?
Notice what comes up,

Connected to your compassion what’s possible going forward in the structure of your life?

It’s like gardening. What if you’re the gardener for all this empty space in your life… in your schedule?

There is room to change it up & the first thing to put in is your ME time.
